Long Exposure

Startrails-8-8-09-2-900.jpg

A long exposure, over 1 second, is often used to create a specific effect. Smooth water, to show speed or just because the level of light is very low. Create an image that uses a long exposure to produce a striking result. Don't take a photograph just because the light is low, i tmust be used to good effect so that the end result is something that you couldn't produce at any other time of the day. If you need advice please feel free to contact me.

Bokeh

Squirrel_spotting.jpg

Bokeh basically means blur but not of the subject itself. It is usually applied to the background or foreground and wuite often is part of the composition of the final image. It is connected with what are known as "Circles of Confusion" which can be produced by the shape of the aperture reacting to points of strong light in the image. The shape of the aperture is an important thing to remember. Just because the shape is already there (a hexagon, octagon) doesn't mean you can't change it with a cut out filter..... Google it and try to be as creative as possible with your image. Contact me to discuss if you want.

Over Exposure

Going_Fishi_n.jpg

Over exposure is not something we like to do. However, on occasions, if it suits the subject, we can use it to good effect. High Key subject, those with a lot of bright areas, can benefit with over exposure. Please understand I am not looking for mistakes, it has to be essential to the make up of the final image. It can be anything from Portrait to Landscapes, or even a still life. Give it some serious thought before you submit or it may be slammed in the comments.

Simple

Cowbrige_sunset.jpg

KISS (Keep it simple stupid) is a phrase used by photographers in many fields. Over complicating your photography can be a big mistake. Sometimes the simplest of subjects and design can be the most effective. So your image must not be busy or complicated. Look around the internet for siple images and wow everyone with virtually nothing. It does work.

Morning Light

Autumnfinal.jpg

You should all know by now that shooting landscapes in the morning (within one hour of sunrise) is one of the best times to work. It takes some effort to drag yourself out of bed early but is rewarding. Your image doesn't have to be a landscape, a portrait taken with dawn light can be very kind to skin tones.

Framed

ventnor-bot-gardnens-01.jpg

I am looking for a natural frame in your image, not using photoshop to put a frame round the image. Neither am I looking for a picture of a window frame, using a window frame as part of the overall composition is fine. You will find all sorts of man made structures and natural ones to use in the image.
